We are setup and in the office to get to do design for people and organizations who value what we bring to the table. When clients understand this and we move along together in the process, it’s magic. When clients don’t understand this and instead put up many road blocks for us in order to get to the design, it’s a bummer. And we cut you loose. Thanks for playing.
Winner: Anthem Awards
Campaign Zero wins three golds at the third annual Anthem Awards in its celebration of purpose-driven work:
End ‘Excited Delirium’
To raise awareness about the medically-baseless concept of “excited delirium,” which has been misused to explain deaths in police custody for decades, disproportionately those of Black men in the United States. In partnership with Physicians for Human Rights.
I’m Harvey the Wolf Keitel
If I’m curt with you it’s because time is a factor. If I’m curt it’s because we gots to get this done. If I’m curt with you, I apologize, but this has gone on long enough. The world is littered with stuff that didn’t get done and that’s not how this thing we’re working on together is going to end. We’ve gone through the needed phases, but now we’re here, and it seems I must be curt with you in order to get this wrapped up in neat little bows.
1,329 people
Police killed at least 1,329 people in 2023. It’s the deadliest year for police violence since 2013. There were just 14 days in the entire year where police did not kill someone in the United States, a troubling and undeniable fact that we have an epidemic in this country that requires us all to step up and protect our communities.
Awareness Isn’t Enough
We can no longer raise awareness for a cause and expect anything to change. Awareness is not enough. It can be a start. It can be a catalyst. It can keep the fight going. But it’s not going to lead to change on its own, especially in America, where polarization, misinformation, suspicion, and contempt for each other are so prevalent.
There once was a time I thought all we had to do was tell enough people and people would do the right thing. I no longer think this. Over these last two decades the people have been made aware time and time again and in far too many instances, nothing has happened. Nothing changed. A dangerous or deadly status quote kept in tact. Often exacerbated.
Yes, keep fighting. But with a clear idea of what does what. Awareness has a place. It’s a tool in the kit. It’s not the end. Maybe the start. And then keep going.
Flattened
When the algorithms flatten the culture, picking up where the corporations left off, leaving us open to robots picking up speed, the next logical move is reset. Or we can simply continue the flattening as everything moves into the geological record. Flat, compact, and very tidy.
